Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC) for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Promising Alternative

Chronic low back pain is a widespread and expensive condition, affecting millions of adults worldwide.  Traditional treatments, such as medication, physical therapy, and surgery, have varying degrees of success and potential drawbacks.  However, a recent study offers hope for a new approach: BMC which contains stem cells.

The Study:

Researchers conducted a controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in treating chronic low back pain caused by severe lumbar spinal degeneration.  The study included patients with moderate to severe pain lasting at least six months who had not found relief through conventional therapies.

Patients in the treatment group received a one-time injection of BM-MSCs into multiple spinal structures (facets, ligaments, transforaminal injections, etc.), along with conventional treatment.  The control group received only conventional treatments, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, exercise programs, and physical therapy.

The results were promising.  Patients in the BMC group showed significant improvements in functional status, pain relief, and overall quality of life compared to the control group.  These improvements were sustained over a 12-month follow-up period.  Additionally, opioid use decreased in the BMC group, while it slightly increased in the control group.

The Take Away:

This study suggests that BMC, which contains stem cells, is a safe and effective alternative for individuals suffering from chronic low back pain due to spinal degeneration.  Regenexx at NROFL offers hope for a future where this debilitating condition can be better managed, potentially reducing the reliance on opioids and improving the quality of life for countless patients.  If you or someone you love are dealing with chronic low back pain, come in for a consultation.
